Heh

I admit, when I went through the requests for this week, and heard the intro to this, I just didn't want to review it, it didn't feel like anything I could listen to. Guess I was wrong in assuming so.

Though I still am not convinced, I do see some talent here. My major problem is that it feels a bit shallow, with little backing up the main melody. I guess that's MIDI for you.

I'll focus on the composition though, which I think is really great. I still say you need something to keep the track going forward, I guess you could say it needs a bit more of an oomph to it, a push.

yo! thanks for reviewing...

yeh, i guess floaty intros never sound so good when written in MIDI, and it's also a bit frustrating for me when i hear it this way, 'cause it sounded good in my head... :(

i also understand what you mean by shallow, and i agree it does need a little "oomph", as you say, even if the general feel is meant to be cool...

i'll willingly admit that i just plain suck at making midi sound good and full, but i'll be working on that in months to come...

anyway...i really enjoyed reading your comment, for the nice advices, sooo...
i'm glad you reviewed my song anyway...XD

Drags on a bit

I just don't feel this track, I'm sorry.

The intro is practically half the song. When the vocals actually appear, they're very low, while the bass takes over. The rhythms feel off, and I just don't like the sound of the vocals. I can barely make out any lyrics.

Did like the part at about 2.25, though, the transition, I guess, between two verses.

Wow

Never thought piano would be so perfect for Creep.

I love how big this song feels, even though it's just this one guy playing a piano. The way you played the melody feels great. This is what makes me want to pick up the piano again. That sounds weird. I just want to play piano again.

And please don't add vocals. Unless they're absolutely perfect, I don't think they could improve the song at all for you.

At times it does feel like you rush some notes, but nothing very noticeable, heard that only on my second playthrough.

Your buildups are pretty amazing too. Love it.

Hi there man! Thanks so much for listening to the piece and the amazing support you give me in your comment. All you say is greatly appreciated

Take the blue pill

Only thing that makes this sound like something other than a track out of the Matrix is probably the flute-like sound at about 0.40, and the bassline.

I really did like it. It's very atmospherical, sounds like the music from a scene that is grand, but also sad. The strings in the back are amazing, and the steady piano on top fills in some emptier spaces. The one string that carries the melody could maybe be just a tad louder, to make it more audible. The flute sample also throws me off a tad, but it does have a somewhat video game-like feel to it.

MeteorManMike responds:

I hadn't thought of that, it does kind of sound like the Matrix.

It's good that you like the strings. I put a lot of effort into making sure the chords worked exactly right with the main melody. I just didn't want one part to drown out the rest of the piece, resulting in the loss of all the little supporting parts.

Thanks for the review!

You've improved

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing some of the stuff you posted earlier, and this is, as far as I can remember, better.

The overall feel of this song is stronger than what I can remember. liking the effect you've put on the initial vocals. The dark bass that goes through strengthens the message. Lyrics are somewhat hard to make out at times, but that's probably just me.

Drums work well with moving the song forward.

Overall a nice track. I don't mind your lyrics at all, playing on controversy is what gets people up in life, as long as you're prepared to take the inevitable amounts of shit from whiteknights.

Cheers

huh.

From the first 40-or-so seconds, I knew this was going to be an amazing track. The production value of this song amazes me, honestly.

I don't really know what J-Pop sounds like, I've never listened to it, and don't plan on, but I have seen some anime, and I guess it does somewhat reminds me. Not because of the bass, but because of the floating, soft synths used to back up the melody, along with the drums, and of course, the spiked melody.

i get this melancholic feel from the track, I'm not sure why, but I think it's an absolutely beautiful track. Any song that can bring out basically any emotion in a person (you know, apart from hate for whoever made the song), gets a star in my book.

I'm also pretty damn amazed at how you managed to keep the song so interesting. It doesn't even feel repetitive to me, even after listening through it two times. It just feels right, every single sound fits perfectly in.

I'm favoriting this, 5'ing this, 10'ing this. Love it. Songs like this makes me glad I'm in the RRC, because I'd never have found it if not.

DJ-Chilvan responds:

Thank you for reviewing! I'm glad the soft synths aided in your discernment, for I really tried to capture that 'anime' feel with them (like in the Inuyasha "My Will" theme song). My song may have captured emotion, but honestly your review has done the same. All the goals of this song I was trying to meet; it seems I have met according to your review and I am very grateful for that.

Dat Drop

Holy crap dude, I could've sworn the hair on my back raised at 00.28, as the song went silent. That drop was awesome. And I really, really don't like dubstep.

Intro sounds more like something hardstyley, but this is certainly dubstep. It might not be the most original track, but in a genre like this, I rarely get to hear anything that makes me go "Daaaamn." This one kinda did. Thanks mainly to that first drop, but also, throughout the song you managed to keep it interesting enough. Loved the vocal sample you used.

Synths are awesome, too, not only the buzzes, but the main synths as well.

Only complaint is the fade-out at the end. Not a fan of fade-outs.

Herdunculus responds:

Wow haha! That's a fairly good response considering you don't usually listen to dubstep. Yea, that weird intro was because I didn't exactly know what to do for one, so I thought, "Why don't I just do what I already know?" and that's how it is. Anyways, I appreciate the review.

Hmm

I feel the song's just a bit too random, and I don't see the originality or abstract side of it, I'm sorry.

It's hardstyle all right, sounds like the stuff my buddy loves listening to. Difference is, this sounds like all of the songs he listens to, mashed into one track. I get that you're going abstract, but this only feels like a huge mess at times.

It has hardstyle elements, it has a good thump going throughout the entire track, I did kinda like the barking you threw in there, you should defo use that in another track.

Dj-GST responds:

Thanks for the review.

This isn't Hardstyle at all, it's UK Hardcore.

Wow, that is cool.

You had me at the intro.

I wouldn't say this is minimalistic at all. The drums keep a steady pace throughout the song and drives it forward, and when the drums go away, there's always some sort of synth to bring it forth as well.

The echo effect you've used fleshes the song out nicely, gives it some sort of backup sound, and at times there are multiple melody lines to keep that effect strong. In addition, there is that bassline synth at approx 0.30, which also sounds amazing.

Especially the drums, I like. the samples are awesome, and the rhythms are so god damn amazing. Loving the spiky synth at about 1.30, along with those drums and the bass keeping the pace. God damn dude.

It's always nice to get a good review like this, especially on a song that has been getting hit hard with criticism like this one. I'm also very happy that you liked the drums! Since I'm a drummer, I take creating the drum beats pretty seriously, so that compliment was good to hear. I really liked this song, and it's been a little tough to get all of this rough critique. But, thank you for a great review!

Not the best drum samples

Overall I really like this loop. It's somewhat fast-paced, very well made, rhythmics go very well with the synths. Not sure how I feel about the synths becoming so sharp just before the 1 minute mark, makes the song feel a bit random. Song doesn't really feel like a loop, as it basically stops, and the only thing making it sound like a loop is the whoosh at the end.

I don't think it's the volume of the drums that mess it up, but rather the samples you've used. You should probably look into getting some better.

lxNikMxl responds:

Thanks for the review! i see what you're saying about the loud synths, and I agree that they do sorta take away from the song, but I still believe that they should be there, considering they add the alarm sound that lead to the song's name. As for the drum samples, I've managed to find and create a few new samples that I have used in my newer songs, since these were pretty crappy. I'm glad you liked the overall structure of the song! Thanks again for the review.
