I had never guessed I'd be included!

I'm 19 though.

Impressive

The only reason I don't give this a 10 is due to the fact that it's a demo, and I really don't like it when games are advertised on NG through demos.

Anyway, this looks absolutely amazing. It's somewhat original, like a twist on other TD games, the story seems fairly solid, and I like the development of certain characters along the entire series.

The graphics and animations are sweet, and the gameplay is rather simple to grasp for anyone playing. A smooth learning curve is always a good thing in games. Music is pretty much perfect, I really love it.

LarsiusPrime responds:

Thanks for your honest and frank review! We understand demos can be a tough sell, so that's why we tried to be as up-front as possible. Glad you liked the game :)

Soothing

This was, surprisingly enough, quite soothing. I ended up just staring at the screen as I drew.

However, I do feel it's a bit too simple. The game doesn't really have much variation to it. Apart from the music, it's fairly the same throughout, apart from switching of colors or speed and such.

In the shape of the brush, I feel you could've added something. Another couple of variations of it. Spirals, stars, I don't know, but as is it's far too simple to reach high up on the scores.

Maybe make it easier for someone to pick colors. I don't know anything about HEX, so I just ended up inputing random numbers. Still looked awesome, byt all means, but maybe having a sort of diagram or something, or sliders instead.

Also noticed that when I set the speed to below 1, the cursor would shoot off screen and away from my cursor. Guess that's a bug?

Kwing responds:

You've really pointed out a lot about the game, which I appreciate. I would have liked to put in simple drawing features over what I already had, but I guess it slipped my mind. But as for stars or spirals, the second cursor only moves in relativity to your mouse. I'm not sure how you could control predefined shapes to tweak them to your liking. Of course, it's not too hard to draw these in yourself... Which is the point of a drawing program after all.

I also wanted to use a palate for selecting colors, but didn't know how to do it. Perhaps if I ever update this I'll add it in, but I'll admit the hex colors get confusing.

Needs work

This game suffers from being repetitive, simple and rather boring. Not to mention that it's impossible to reach the goal you want us to reach.

First off, let's talk graphics. They're really simple, drawn with the pencil tool, I should assume, and though they don't look bad, they certainly don't look good. Everything looks really flat and the coloring is boring. You should try first off making your models better. Though I wouldn't support using the line too for everything, I believe you could've used it for some of the background items in this one. THe animation isn't terrible, but the feet move way too fast and in an unnatural walking sequence.

There is no audio that I could hear, which is a real bad thing. Sound effects and a soundtrack, maybe even a selection of songs you could choose from, is always a nice addition to a game.

The gameplay itself is really simple. You walk back and forth at a really high speed, you jump and you shoot. The jump lasts way long and is far too slow to be used efficiently.

The enemy spawns from behind are terrible to fight. You're really not given enough time to turn around and kill them, as they start shooting before they come on screen, and both the enemies and the bullets move really fast. Jumping doesn't really help either here.

The menu could use a freshener. Different colors, better looking buttons, a background and a nice title would give off a really good first impression. I thought I'd be given a backstory if I clicked the "Why you're to survive" button, but there's no real story to it. It's not necessary, but somewhat misleading with a button like that.

Variations in enemies and weapons would be real nice. Being able to pick up weapons and ammo, and fight different enemies in different stages would really make this game a lot better.

If I had a 60, or 90-day free trial, you'd probably have all those features. ;) Yeah, I guess I forgot to put the backstory in there, but time was running out on my trial, and I had to get it out there before I had a 3/4 finished project on my hands and no way to finish it without shelling out un-recooperative cash on the software. Updates, or a "Remastered Edition" of this game, will come online soon after I can get the full version of Adobe Flash CS5.5.

Simple and nice

A fairly simple soundboard, it does the job and it looks pretty nice.

Menu is real simple. Just the buttons and a nice picture depicting the character the voices come from, the Scout. Nothing needs to be changed right there. Maybe the mute all sounds button could be a bit clearer? I actually missed it for some time, but just found it right now.

The audio quality is real nice, but there is some sort of noise whenever a piece cuts off, might want to fix that for the next one.

Frenzy responds:

Yep, I will try and fix that on the next one. Thanks for the review!

Very cool

A lot of nice things to say about this track, few bad things.

FIrst off, I love the graphics. They're really simple, but really captivating. Especially the colors you've used, I see that a lot of spriters or pixel artists in general often use hard colors without shading and different nuances, but you're pulling that off greatly.

The way you did conversations and monologues was real simple, maybe you should make it possible to press Space to continue the conversations as you don't use the mouse too often. The music got a bit tiring after a while, though it was very relaxing. An option to pause it would be greatly appreciated.

The story itself is nice, it's something new and original, and it's easy to follow. The grammar is a bit off, you should probaly have had someone check your spelling, but you're already aware of that.

Lastly, the hit detection is just a bit off, I can see the robot clipping through for example boxes at times.

EventHorizon responds:

Thanks, you were very kind, I'm glad you liked the graphics also because I've been there a long time to draw it, the pause button is a good idea and I'm sorry about the spelling.

Awesome fun

I'm a huge fan of bulletstorm games, and this was a real fun edition.

I found an annoying bug, though. As I went to the main menu, the box saying "Connected Newgrounds API" started flickering, and half the game screen started blinking red, which carried into when I selected a new game mode.

The review:
Great fun, kept me entertained for quite some time. It's real easy towards the beginning, but it gets damn hard damn fast. I like the different game modes you put in, really appreciated that, lengthens the lifespan of the game.

Graphics were simple, enemies were varied, and the music was quite intense. you could probably have some even more intense music, and the option of selecting two or three different tracks.

SeditionGames responds:

Yeah sorry about that - the first swf I uploaded had the newgrounds API on multiple frames, so it tried to load several times.

I fixed it... thanks for the review

Good idea, bad execution

I'm sorry, but this just doesn't cut it for me.

I'm a huge fan of Minecraft, and mini games like this where you get points based off of what you mine could really turn out fun, but this just fell way short.

The graphics are horrendous, there's no detail or depth to anything, the gameplay is not very exciting and there's really no goal to it, as it just never seems to end, you can keep doing this forever. Not even a high score list.

I can't really give this any points at all. It doesn't look like any effort went into it at all.

Little-Rena responds:

I spent months on this!

Really simple, but it works

I see how this can me really nice practice, but it's nothing special whatsoever. It's a simple sidescroller, with quite generic enemies, it doesn't have many flaws, but it could do a lot better.

Biggest issue for me is how incredibly slow you move. It feels tedious and takes forever to move along the map. The enemies are very generic, there really are only two unless you count the boss, which I found way to hard, mainly due to the very poor controls.

The level up system doesn't seem to do much, it heals me, and sure, it might make me stronger but there's not way for me to find that out without a damage counter of sorts. The game is so short that a proper level system wouldn't do much anyway, and leveling systems aren't normal in continuous 2D scrolles like this, unless it's separated in levels where you can upgrade in between.

The background music gets quite boring, the graphics are really, really simple, and the story is about as thin as it can get, all pretty important for an "RPG" sidescroller like this.

Cheers

MSGhero responds:

Thanks for the review. My purpose for this was learning and getting used to AS3, but I'll keep those tips in mind for the future. I wanted to expand it, but I have a nasty habit of going overboard and burning out : (

Not bad for a first.

It's definitely a pretty good game, but there are some things you could do to make it somewhat better.

The graphcis are pretty boring. The menus are actually quite painful too look at, with the black background and the flashy fonts and stuff. Think of adding a cooler background, and a simpler layout for the menu. Some menu music would bee nice as well.

The hit detection is rather horrible. Both your bullets and the ships, they hit you before they're close and vice-versa. Another thing is that the game feels pretty repetitive. I mean, it doesn't change much. Or it changes, I just died before I got that far. More enemies as you progress, different enemies, like enemies that shoot back and can take more shots. Upgrades to the weapons, etc.

THe music should be on as the games starts. I like that you have amute button, a lot of game-makers leave that out. Maybe some options for music?

Just a few tips that could help you make even better games, or improve this one.

norfor22 responds:

Thanks for the feedback.
i'll try to improve the single player, i agree that it is quite boring ^^

regarding to the hit test problem - i am totaly aware of that but i just don't know how to "tell" flash to hit the enemy\ship only when your'e actually hitting it, because now its when you enter the "square" of the MC.(i think you know what i mean?)
as soon as i'll know how to fix it...well, i will fix it.
I'm planning to add levels and new enemies(and almost positive about adding a shop) in the next versions.

Thanks.

I like it when people call me bro.
